PART 1: UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF TITHING

A) Definition of Tithe

Tithing, in biblical terms, refers to the practice of giving one-tenth of one’s earnings or produce as a contribution to the house of God (Leviticus 27:30).

B) Origin of Tithing

The practice of tithing was introduced in the Bible during the time of Abraham when he gave a tenth of his spoils to Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High (Genesis 14:20).

C) Biblical Mandate on Tithing

The book of Leviticus establishes the tithe as a required offering to the Lord, set apart and holy (Leviticus 27:30). Malachi 3:10 encourages believers to bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there would be food in God’s house.

PART 2: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF TITHING

A) Expression of Gratitude

Tithes is an expression of gratitude towards God for all His blessings and provision (Deuteronomy 26:1-11).

B) Acknowledgment of God’s Ownership

Tithing acknowledges that everything we have comes from God and truly belongs to Him (1 Chronicles 29:14).

C) Act of Worship Proverbs 3:9

Tithing, or giving a portion of one’s income to the church, is considered an act of worship because

a. It shows gratitude to God for the financial blessings He has given. It’s a way to thank Him for His abundant generosity.

b. It exhibits faith in God’s provision. Tithing requires trust in God’s promise to provide for us.

c. It demonstrates commitment and obedience to God. Tithing is commanded in the Bible and by willingly giving, we show our obedience and dedication to God’s will.

Through this act of giving, Christians acknowledge God’s sovereignty over their lives and possessions. It’s an act of surrender and humility, recognizing that everything we have comes from Him.

So, in essence, tithing isn’t merely about giving money, but it’s about worshipping God with what He has given to us, thereby recognizing Him as the ultimate provider.

PART 3: THE BLESSINGS ATTACHED TO TITHING

A) Divine Provision

God promises to bless those who tithe faithfully and obediently. He promises to open the windows of heaven and pour out blessings until there is no more need (Malachi 3:10).

B) Protection from Devourers

God promises protection against those who would devour or destroy (Malachi 3:11).

C) Testimony of God’s Goodness

As a result of our obedience, all nations will call us blessed, for ours will be a delightful land (Malachi 3:12).

PART 4: TITHING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

Jesus emphasized the relevance of tithes in his teaching, and highlighted also the importance of godliness even when you are tithing (Mat.23:23).  Generally, however, In the New Testament, giving isn’t only limited to the law of the tithe as prescribed in the Old Testament. It expands to generous and cheerful giving out of love for God and for the furtherance of His kingdom (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Conclusion:

The practice of tithing is not merely an old religious ritual; it is a principle that when adhered to can lead to blessing and prosperity. By giving our tithes, we are saying that God is first in our lives and that we trust Him to provide for us. As believers, let’s seek to honour God with our wealth and watch Him bless us in return.
