The basic principles of Christian giving is a topic that needs to be talked about. Christian giving is not merely a financial transaction; it is a spiritual practice that aligns with biblical principles, reflects God’s character, and contributes to the well-being of individuals and the fulfillment of God’s purposes on earth. It is an integral part of a believer’s journey of faith, obedience, and love. In this teaching we will look at the basic principles of Giving:
- GIVING IS ESSENTIAL (Matthew 6:2, Malachi 3:10):
Jesus expects and requires believers to give. Christian giving is not optional but an essential aspect of discipleship.
- RIGHT MOTIVES (Matthew 6:1, Proverbs 16:2, 1 Corinthians 4:5):
Jesus emphasizes giving for the glory of God, cautioning against giving to be admired by people. Giving should be driven by a desire for God’s approval, not human praise.
- BENEVOLENT GIVING (Matthew 6:2-3, Acts 20:35):
Jesus specifically addresses charitable giving, emphasizing aid, charity, and benevolence towards the needy in the form of “alms.”
- GIVING IS TO GOD THROUGH MEN (Matthew 6:3-4):
Reminds believers that giving is ultimately an offering to the heavenly Father, who sees what is done in secret and rewards accordingly.
- ACT OF WORSHIP (1 Corinthians 16:2, Hebrews 13:16, Proverbs 3:9):
Paul connects the act of giving with worship, emphasizing that the collection for the saints is an integral part of the believers’ regular Lord’s Day worship.
- IN LIGHT OF THE INCARNATION (2 Corinthians 8:9, Philippians 2:5-8):
Paul establishes Christ’s self-giving as the standard for Christian giving. Believers are called to emulate Christ’s sacrificial generosity rather than debating specific percentages.
- GIVING ACCORDING TO MEANS (2 Corinthians 8:12, Luke 21:1-4):
Paul emphasizes giving in proportion to one’s means, discouraging giving beyond what a person has. Those blessed materially are expected to give more. However aat the point of sacrifice it is possible to people to give by faith which is normally not according to their income.(For example if someone decide to sacrifice his FULL salary to God in expectation of a miracle)

- LIBERALITY CONNECTED TO BLESSINGS (2 Corinthians 9:6, Proverbs 22:9):
Both Jesus and Paul highlight a connection between the liberality of Christian giving and the Lord’s blessings. Sowing bountifully leads to reaping bountifully.
- WILLING AND FREE GIVING (2 Corinthians 9:7):
Christian giving must be voluntary, done with a willing heart, and not under compulsion. Believers should purpose in their hearts what to give.
- CHEERFUL GIVING (2 Corinthians 9:7):
Paul stresses that God loves a cheerful giver, indicating that the Lord takes delight in those who give joyfully and with enthusiasm.
In summary, Christian giving is a mandatory yet voluntary, benevolent, worshipful act rooted in the principles of honoring God, self-sacrifice, proportionality, and joyous generosity.
